I've always liked Marge's email announcements, so logic suggested that I would like Marge's act. I saw her play solo once at a Songwriters' Asscoiation of Washington open mic, and was left wishing for more sound. I got it on this day. Marge has a band now, and it's not a stretch to say that it's as talented and eclectic as she is. On hand were superlative sax-man Ron Holloway and that BMW of bass players, Rico Pettrucelli. Too smart for country, too slick for folk, Marge defies stylistic pre-determination. The choice of accompanying instruments in itself is proof: Marge has no place for the heretofore obligatory lead guitar man (though I imagined parts at times). If Marge were a stock, she'd be a blue chip with a triple digit price-to-earnings ratio. Go out and see her in an intimate setting while you still can.

p.s.: Shawn Colvin played down the street later that day. It was cute when she stopped to take the gum out of her mouth.
