The Starbucks Coffeehouse series has shaken out over the years, so that there are fewer locations but more enduring venues that remain. The Glen Burnie shop, of all places, is one of those venerable establishments. That is due to the loyal locals who make a bee-line here every Wednesday. It is equally due to the appearance of folk luminaries like Doris Justis.

Doris is at the vanguard of D.C.'s more studied folk scene-- the one that has the respect of public radio and the more discerning devotees. Park your tobacco and beer at the door, ladies and gentlemen; this is for knowlegeable listening audiences! A former school teacher, Doris delivers original songs and old-timey standards that appeal to a wide variety of listeners. This was very much in evidence as she had drawn a good-sized crowd that sat close and listened attentively to Doris' polished performance that was part story-telling, part sing-along. She accompanies herself with a well-played Loudoun jumbo guitar. The Loudouns are perfect for her style-- they sound for all the world like they have gut strings, although I saw the bronze winding with my own eyes.

Catch Doris' act when you can; if not in person, you can surely find her on WAMU FM.
