Starting off was Suburban Legend, a straight-forward, boy-next-door band fronted by Eric and his buddy Mark. Tara plays drums (while keeping an eye on the kids at the same time) and might even be a bit of a scene stealer. Armed with regular-guy guitars (note the Dean Markley pickups) and a classic rock set list, Suburban Legend gets a ton of gigs by just having a good time and being themselves. There's a lesson here for some of us, I think....
Dave Alberding followed up with accompaniment from a well-rounded trio. For a variety of reasons, this outfit books itself as "Heavy." Dave is superb crooner along the lines of Sam Cooke meets Gordon Lightfoot. Jeannie Flinchbaugh toots a flute, and somehow makes it fit quite nicely into Dave's blues-rock context. Percussionist Norm Thorn added a crisp bottom end to the proceedings. The crowd buzzed about this act the rest of the afternoon.
Wutta dolt I yam. Carey Colvin and On the Air had a superb set, but the camera and I did not click so well by this part of the afternoon. My apologies to Carey, who's capable backup band just didn't come out too well on this roll. I owe her one.
I played emcee and did a set, too. Here's one, two, and three.
Carey Colvin has a website.
