Most tourists travel with a camera and a fist-full of maps; we travelled with cameras and guitar paraphernalia. And so it was-- with a bit of premeditation-- that we stumbled upon Club Passim, a folk music landmark of some repute nestled away in a half-basement in Cambridge Square (you know, Harvard, and all that...) Tonight was open-mic night. Smoke-free, booze-free, serious musicians listening to musicans. I wish they had something like this in D.C. The host signs you up in lottery fashion. Then, as the "curtain" is drawn at 9:00, he announces rounds of three performers. Each takes their turn-- one song per person :-) But as I said, it's a listening audience, and the average level of musicianship was better that any open mic I've seen back home.
Yours truly closed out round four with "I Remember" (a favorite from the CD). The missus had all of three shots left on her roll of film. Here's the
second. By golly, you don't wanna see the third. If I'm lucky, I'll go back some time with my camera and take some shots of Club Passim's regulars.
